About Me
Hi - my name is Brittney! I am passionate about health education and health equity, especially when it comes to women and children. My journey to becoming a mother was a difficult one. I was not fully educated, I experienced gaps in care, and I lacked proper support. This led me to my mission: The Present Parent, LLC.
I earned a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) in disease prevention and health promotion from Eastern Virginia Medical School/Old Dominion University in 2020. During my graduate school experience and practicum, I volunteered at a pregnancy resource center where I helped new moms understand how important it is to have support during the pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting experience. In addition, I completed my practicum hours in the Community Health Research Department at EVMS assisting on a joint grant with Portsmouth General Hospital addressing health disparities among minorities in health education. After graduation, I accepted a position as an epidemiologist working to conduct infectious disease surveillance activities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, I helped to launch a health promotion campaign for children in schools to help promote better hand washing techniques to minimize transmission of viruses/infections. While I learned so much working within infectious disease, my heart has always been dedicated to the health and wellness of the mamas and babies.
I received professional training and I am now working toward my certification as a DONA International Certified childbirth educator, and birth/postpartum doula. It is my hope to help guide women and their families as they embark upon their pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting journey.
As a way to help close the gap of health disparities among those who are underserved and/or underinsured, 10% of proceeds will go toward the development of a 501 (3)(C) non-profit foundation to help women to obtain these services at a discounted rate. Please also consider making a donation to help mamas and babies in the Hampton Roads area. Visit the Donate page for more information.
